Dancing Raisin Density Tower
This experiment asks children to layer corn syrup, water, and sparkling water in a tall clear container without mixing them, then drop in a few raisins and watch them rise and sink repeatedly. The density column is the science setup and the dancing raisins are the payoff. It runs well with a group because each child can build their own column in a glass or you can build one shared tower and let everyone observe. The result stays active and interesting for several minutes with no further input from you.

Before you start
Set out all liquids in separate measuring cups before children arrive so each child can pour without fuss. Tall clear glasses or wide-mouth mason jars work best — you need to see the layers. The trickiest step is pouring the second and third liquids without collapsing the layers below; remind children to pour very slowly down the side of the glass, not straight down the middle. Food coloring the water layer (one drop) makes the layers visually distinct and helps children actually see the boundary between them. The raisins will not dance until they are dropped into the sparkling water layer, so make sure sparkling water is the top layer. The activity winds down naturally as the carbonation in the sparkling water depletes; plan for about five minutes of dancing before it slows.

Pour the corn syrup layer
Tell children to pour about three tablespoons of corn syrup into the bottom of their glass. This is the densest liquid, so it goes in first. Let it settle for a moment before moving on.
Tip: Corn syrup pours slowly — give it a full minute to settle flat before the next layer.

Add the colored water layer
Add a single drop of food coloring to the water in a separate cup and stir it. Ask children to pour the colored water very slowly down the inside wall of the glass, not straight into the center. When done correctly, you will see a visible line between the two layers.
Tip: A tilted glass helps the water slide down the wall without crashing into the syrup.

Pour sparkling water on top
Pour the sparkling water in the same slow, side-wall method. This is the lightest layer and should sit on top. If layers mix a little, they will re-settle over a minute or two. Tell children to watch for the bubbles already rising in the sparkling water layer.
Tip: Use sparkling water right after opening — a flat bottle will not produce enough bubbles to lift the raisins.

Drop in the raisins
Have each child drop three to five raisins into their glass. Ask them to predict what will happen before the raisins hit the liquid. The raisins will sink through the sparkling water layer, collect carbon dioxide bubbles on their wrinkled surface, and then rise as the bubbles carry them up.
Tip: Ask for predictions before the drop — 'float, sink, or something else?' gets the group thinking.

Observe and explain the cycle
Watch the raisins rise and fall. When a raisin reaches the surface, the bubbles pop and the raisin sinks again. Tell the group: 'The bubbles of gas attach to the rough skin of the raisin and make it light enough to float. When the bubbles pop at the top, the raisin gets heavy again and sinks.' Let them watch for two to three minutes.
Tip: Point out that the layers are still mostly separate — the liquids did not mix because they have different weights.

Compare and clean up
Ask whether the layers are more or less distinct than when they started and why they think that is. If time allows, have one child gently stir their glass and observe that the layers disappear when disturbed. Collect glasses and pour contents down the sink — the mixture is safe to discard.
Tip: The stirring comparison makes a strong endpoint: order versus disorder in one visible moment.
Try it another way
- For a more precise test, have two children each use a different carbonated liquid — plain sparkling water versus a lemon-lime soda — and compare how long the raisins keep dancing.
- To make the layers more dramatic, add a small amount of cooking oil as a fourth layer between the water and the sparkling water, and see where the raisins stop.
- If only two children are doing this, give each a glass with slightly different amounts of sparkling water and have them track how many times their raisin rises before it stops.
Keep in mind
- Corn syrup is very sticky — keep a damp cloth nearby and remind children not to touch their eyes after handling it.
What they get out of it
Children see that different liquids have different weights and will sit in separate layers, and that gas bubbles are strong enough to carry a small solid object up through a liquid.
