Secret Birthday Code Messages

Each child writes a short birthday message to the birthday child, encodes it using a cipher key you provide, then swaps with another child to decode. The birthday child ends up with a small stack of decoded messages to take home. This age group tends to get genuinely absorbed in the encoding step, and the competitive energy of decoding someone else's message keeps things focused without any prizes or winners needed.

Before you start

The only prep is writing out the cipher key — a simple A=1 through Z=26 number substitution is the easiest, but you can make it more interesting by shifting the alphabet one step (A=B, B=C, and so on). Write the key clearly on one sheet of paper and make a copy for each child, or write it large on a single sheet placed in the center of the table. Give each child a blank index card or half-sheet for their message. Suggest a message length: 'Write five to eight words — long enough to be a real message, short enough to actually encode.' Where it stalls: children who want to write very long messages and then lose patience encoding them. Redirect early: 'Pick your best sentence.' The swap step is where energy picks up — children are genuinely curious whether their decoder gets it right. Wind down by collecting all decoded messages, stacking them, and handing them to the birthday child.

Steps

    Write and share the cipher key

    Before children sit down, write the cipher key on a sheet of paper: A=1, B=2, C=3 and so on through Z=26. Place one copy in front of each seat, or one large copy in the center. Tell children: 'This is the key. Anyone who has it can decode any message.'

    Tip: A=1 through Z=26 is the right starting cipher for this age — simple enough to use quickly, complex enough to feel like a real code.

    Give the message prompt

    Say: 'Write a birthday message to the birthday child — five to eight words. Something real, not just happy birthday.' Give examples: a memory, a wish, something you like about them. This primes better messages and shorter ones, which are much easier to encode.

    Tip: Writing the message first, then encoding, is much less frustrating than trying to do both at once.

    Encode the message

    Show children how to write each letter's number below it, separated by dashes or spaces: H-E-L-L-O becomes 8-5-12-12-15. Let them work through it at their own pace. Walk around the table to catch transcription errors before the swap, which saves frustration later.

    Tip: A common error: forgetting that spaces between words need a separator, such as a slash or a longer gap between number groups.

    Swap and decode

    Collect the encoded number sequences and redistribute them so no child gets their own message back. Tell them: 'Use the key to work backward — find each number and write the letter above it.' Give them a few minutes. Most children this age can decode a five-to-eight-word message in under four minutes.

    Tip: Pair a slower decoder with a slightly shorter message by swapping strategically when you redistribute.

    Check and hand over

    Let each child read out the decoded message and check it against the original. Celebrate correct decodes. Collect all the decoded cards and the original plain-text messages together and give them to the birthday child as a stack they can reread at home.

    Tip: If time allows, let each child decorate their decoded card with colored pencils before handing them over.

Try it another way

  • For a more advanced group, shift the cipher by three letters instead of using A=1, so children must figure out the shift amount before they can decode — add one encoded hint to get them started.
  • If two children finish early, challenge them to write a second encoded message to each other using only numbers, then race to decode it.
  • For a quieter, individual version, each child encodes their own message and the birthday child takes the whole set home to decode privately after the party.

What they get out of it

Children practice the idea that the same information can be represented in more than one way, and that you need a shared key to communicate across a code — which is how real encryption works.
