Duct Tape and Cardboard Sled Racer

Children this age are ready to treat building as a problem to solve rather than just a thing to make. This project asks them to design a small model sled — something that can actually slide — then test it on a tilted plank or a hardcover book ramp and adjust the design based on what happens. It runs long enough for a full snow day and rewards persistence over one sitting.

Before you start

Before the child starts, gather cardboard, tape, and identify a ramp surface: a large hardcover book propped against a stack of others, a wide baking sheet tilted on a folded towel, or a smooth cutting board. The ramp does not need to be long — eighteen inches (about 45 cm) is enough. The child will almost certainly build a flat sled that spins or flips; that is the point. Where this stalls is when the first version fails and the child wants to quit. Frame the first test before they build it: tell them the first version is a prototype and expect it to need changes. After two or three iterations, most children settle on a design they are proud of. Wind-down happens naturally when they have a version that slides consistently — at that point the engineering is done and they will shift to decorating it.

Steps

    Set up the ramp before they start

    Prop a large hardcover book, a smooth cutting board, or a rimless baking sheet at a shallow angle against a stack of books or a folded bath towel. Test the slope yourself by sliding a small flat piece of cardboard down it — you want a gentle, consistent slide, not a drop. Adjust the angle until it works.

    Tip: A tile or hardwood floor at the base works much better than carpet for catching the sled.

    Introduce the challenge clearly

    Tell the child their job is to build a small sled — roughly six to eight inches long — that slides down the ramp without flipping or spinning. Say the first version is called a prototype and it is supposed to need fixing. This reframes failure as part of the plan before it happens.

    Tip: Avoid suggesting a shape; let their first attempt be fully theirs.

    Stay available but don't direct

    Sit nearby while they design and cut. Step in for thick corrugated cuts and when tape is refusing to hold a joint. Ask questions rather than giving answers: 'Why do you think it spun?' or 'What would happen if the front were curved?' Let them answer and act on their own ideas.

    Tip: Resist fixing a failed version for them — ask what they would change first.

    Run the first test together

    When the first sled is built, have the child place it at the top of the ramp and release it. Watch together and name what you both see: did it spin, flip, or veer? Ask them to describe what happened in their own words before suggesting any change. This is where the engineering actually happens.

    Tip: A coin or two taped on top adds weight and often steadies a sled that spins.

    Support the iteration cycle

    After each test, ask what one thing they want to change. Encourage them to keep the old version intact and build a new one — so they can compare. After two or three versions most children arrive at a design that works and want to decorate it with washable markers.

    Tip: Label each version 'Version 1,' 'Version 2' on the back so the child can track what changed.

Try it another way

  • Challenge the child to build a second sled with a different front shape and race the two versions down the ramp side by side.
  • Add a small cargo test: tape a coin to the sled and see if the design still works under that extra load without adjusting anything first.
  • For a quieter version, skip the ramp and ask the child to build a sled that can hold a specific number of pennies flat without collapsing.

Keep in mind

  • Adult handles all cuts through thick corrugated cardboard with regular scissors; the child uses safety scissors only on thinner single-layer card.

Children learn to look closely at what went wrong, make one change at a time, and understand that building something that actually works usually takes several tries.
