Freestanding Cardboard Tube Tower

This is a genuine engineering challenge: the goal is height and stability, and both are in tension. Children this age are ready to plan, test, fail, and revise without needing the outcome managed for them. You set the constraint — it has to stand on its own for ten seconds — and step back. What they end up with is a structure they built through a real process, not a template.

Before you start

Gather tubes before you call the child over — paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper rolls if you have them. Add a few cereal boxes they can cut into flat card, a roll of masking tape, and safety scissors. Do not sketch a design for them; the planning stage is part of the activity. Where this stalls most often is at the first collapse, which can be deflating. Have a calm response ready: ask them what they think gave way and what they would change. Children often go wider at the base on the second attempt without being told to. The activity winds down naturally after two or three builds, or when they hit a height they are satisfied with. Leave the winning tower standing if there is space.

    Use boxes that held food or household goods, not chemicals; wipe clean before use.

Steps

    Set the challenge clearly

    Tell the child the goal: build the tallest freestanding tower they can, using only the tubes, card, tape, and scissors on the table. The rule is that it has to stand on its own for a count of ten with no hands touching it. Give them a minute to look at the materials before they start.

    Tip: Do not suggest a design. A minute of looking before touching is time well spent.

    Let them plan on paper first

    Ask them to sketch their plan on a scrap of paper before touching the materials. It does not need to be detailed — even a rough side-view drawing helps them think through how the pieces connect. Ask one question: where will the weight go when it gets tall?

    Tip: One open question is enough. Too many questions feel like hints.

    Support the cutting as needed

    Cut the cereal boxes into flat card pieces if the child asks, or supervise as they use safety scissors to do it themselves. Wrapping paper tubes may need adult cutting with regular scissors if the cardboard is dense. Stay nearby but let the child direct what size and shape they want.

    Tip: A wider, shorter piece of card makes a more stable platform than a narrow one.

    Step back during the build

    Once cutting is done, move to a nearby seat and let them build. Resist offering structural advice unless they ask directly. If they ask 'do you think this will fall?' redirect it: 'what do you think? what would make it stronger at that point?' Keep your tone curious rather than coaching.

    Tip: Staying seated signals that you are available but not hovering.

    Run the ten-second test

    When the child says they are done, count out ten seconds aloud together with no one touching the structure. If it holds, measure the height and record it. If it falls, ask what they noticed as it went. Give them full control of the next attempt.

    Tip: Record each height on a scrap of paper so progress across attempts is visible.

    Reflect on the final version

    After the last successful stand, ask them to explain what they changed between attempts and why it worked. Keep this brief — two or three minutes of conversation. Point out one specific thing you noticed them figure out on their own. Leave the tower standing if you can.

    Tip: Name the specific thing: 'I noticed you made the base wider after the second fall.'

Try it another way

  • Add a weight test: after the tower stands, place a single hardcover book on top and see if the structure holds for another ten seconds.
  • For two children, give each their own equal set of materials and see whose tower stands tallest — then ask them to build one together using both sets.
  • Limit the tape to a set number of pieces — say ten strips — to push the child toward structural solutions rather than tape-everything solutions.

Keep in mind

  • If cutting dense cardboard tubes, use adult scissors for that step and hand over to the child once pieces are cut.

What they get out of it

Children learn that a tall structure needs a wider, heavier base — and that figuring out why something fell is more useful than starting over from scratch without thinking.
