Density Tower in a Jar

Layering liquids by density is one of the most visually striking things you can do with kitchen ingredients, and it holds attention across a long indoor day because the result sits on the counter afterward and keeps prompting questions. Children in this age band have the fine motor control and patience to pour carefully, which makes the success feel genuinely earned. You end up with a jar showing three or four distinct liquid layers that can stand on the counter for hours.

Before you start

Before the child comes in, gather your liquids and pour each into its own small cup so the child is not handling large bottles. Honey or corn syrup goes in first, then dish soap, then water, then vegetable oil on top — work in that order and do not change it mid-experiment or the layers will mix. Pour very slowly down the inside wall of the jar, not straight down the center; this is the step where most children need a reminder. The activity tends to stall when a child pours too fast, which muddies two layers together — if that happens, say 'Let's watch and see if they separate again' because they often will partially, given a few minutes of stillness. Wind-down is natural once the jar is full; set it somewhere safe and visible so the child can check on it throughout the day.

Steps

    Pre-pour each liquid

    Measure each liquid into its own small cup before the child arrives. Line them up in pouring order: honey or corn syrup first, then dish soap, then water, then oil last. If you are adding food coloring, stir one drop into the water cup now.

    Explain the question

    Set the empty jar in front of the child and say, 'These four liquids all look kind of the same, but they weigh different amounts. I wonder if we can stack them on top of each other without stirring.' Let the child predict whether that is possible.

    Pour the first layer

    Show the child how to tilt the jar slightly and pour the honey slowly down the inside wall rather than splashing it straight down. Pour the honey together the first time so the child sees the technique, then let them take over for the next layers.

    Tip: Go slowly — thirty seconds per layer is about right for keeping the layers distinct.

    Add each layer in turn

    Have the child pour each liquid in order, pausing after each to watch the new liquid settle. Ask 'Where did it stop? Why do you think it stopped there?' before adding the next one. Resist the urge to rush through — the pauses are where the thinking happens.

    Observe and count the layers

    Once all four liquids are in, set the jar on a flat surface and step back. Count the visible layers together. If you have a flashlight, shine it from below and watch the layers glow. Ask the child to describe the order from bottom to top.

    Test an object

    Drop a small item into the jar — a raisin, a small button, or a grape — and watch where it stops sinking. Ask the child to predict before it goes in. This extends the activity naturally and introduces the idea that solids have density too.

    Tip: A grape tends to rest between the oil and water layers, which surprises most children.

Try it another way

  • An older child can try to predict the layer order before pouring by testing whether each liquid sinks or floats in a glass of water first.
  • For two children, one pours while the other holds the jar steady and calls out what they see — trading jobs between each liquid.
  • After the jar sits undisturbed for several hours, revisit it and ask the child whether anything has changed.

Keep in mind

  • Use a glass jar carefully on hard floors — set it on a folded towel and away from the table edge throughout the activity.

What they get out of it

Children learn that liquids have different weights and that heavier liquids sink below lighter ones, even when you pour them gently on top.
