Rainy Day Pretend Play at home
When the rain has been going for an hour and the usual options are exhausted, pretend play is one of the few things that can hold a child's attention for a full afternoon stretch without requiring a trip anywhere or a complicated set-up. What makes it work on a day like this is that it hands the child a world to run — a vet clinic, a mission, a newsroom — and then mostly gets out of the way. These three activities share that quality: they each have enough structure to start easily and enough open space for the child to take over. You are handing them a premise, not a script.

Choosing one
If your child is 3–5, start with the Stuffed Animal Waiting Room Vet Clinic — it needs almost nothing, runs quietly, and you only need to step in for a moment if the play stalls. For ages 5–8 with a bit more energy to burn, the Living Room Space Mission Control involves some building first, which buys you twenty minutes before the play even begins. The Neighborhood News TV Studio is the right call for an 8–10 year old who wants a project they own start to finish — it needs no help once it is set up.
Before you start
Before you call anyone over, pull out a shoebox or two, some scrap paper, tape, and a notepad — those four things cover all three activities. For the vet clinic, line up the stuffed animals in advance; for mission control, tape one paper panel to the box so the child can see what to do with the others; for the news studio, write the broadcast format on a sticky note before handing it over. The thing most likely to go wrong across all three is the planning phase running too long and losing steam — give each one a loose time prompt early on to keep it moving forward.
