Layered Cut-Paper Solar System Mobile

This activity asks your child to think about scale and proportion — the planets are cut from different sizes of paper circles to roughly represent their relative sizes, which means Saturn is noticeably larger than Earth, and Jupiter larger still. The mobile structure is made from paper straws or folded paper tubes, so the whole thing is paper from top to bottom. The balancing step at the end is genuinely tricky and satisfying.

Before you start

Before calling your child over, find a reference: any library book showing the planets in order, or a printed page showing their relative sizes works well — you want something your child can look at while deciding how big to cut each disc. Pre-cut a strip of thread or string into eight pieces of varying lengths (roughly 4 to 12 inches, or 10 to 30 cm) so that part is ready. The common stall is the balancing step — a mobile that has all its planets strung at equal intervals will tip. Tell your child this is expected and walk them through sliding the thread positions until it balances, rather than trying to calculate it in advance. Wind down by hanging the finished mobile near a window so it turns slowly.

Steps

  1. 1

    Look up the planet order together

    Sit with your child and look at a reference showing all eight planets. Point out that Jupiter is about eleven times wider than Earth, and that Mercury is tiny. Say, 'We can't be perfectly to scale, but we can get the order of size right.' That framing takes the pressure off perfection.

    Tip: If you have no book, search 'planet size comparison' and print one image — one page is enough.

    Draw and cut planet discs

    Your child draws circles freehand on colored paper — largest for Jupiter, then Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mars, Mercury in descending order — and cuts them out. The circles don't need to be perfect; slightly irregular edges read as planetary.

    Tip: Tracing around cups and lids gives clean circles if freehand is frustrating.

    Decorate each planet accurately

    Using washable markers, your child adds surface details: Jupiter's horizontal bands, Saturn's rings (a separate ellipse cut from paper and glued behind the disc), Mars's rust-red tone, Earth's blue and green patches. Keep the reference visible throughout.

    Tip: A thin strip of paper glued behind Saturn like a collar is more convincing than drawing the ring on.

    Punch holes and attach strings

    Make a small hole at the top of each planet disc with a hole punch or sharpened pencil point. Thread a piece of string through each hole and tie it. The strings should be different lengths so the planets hang at different heights.

    Tip: A small piece of tape over the knot on the back stops the thread from pulling through thin paper.

    Build the two-tier mobile frame

    Lay two paper straws or rolled paper tubes parallel. Tie a string to the center of each as a hanging loop. Hang four planets from each straw, spacing them across the length. Tie a third string connecting the midpoints of the two straws so one hangs below the other.

    Tip: Hang the top straw from a door frame or coat hook while you work — it's much easier than holding it.

    Balance by sliding thread positions

    Once all planets hang, the mobile will almost certainly tip to one side. Show your child that sliding the planets along the straw — not retying — shifts the balance. Work through it together: 'The heavier side needs its planets moved inward toward the middle.'

    Tip: A small piece of tape can lock a thread in place once balanced so it doesn't slide later.

    Hang and observe the mobile

    Tie the finished mobile to a lamp hook, curtain rod, or a piece of tape on a door frame. Step back and look at it from different angles. Ask your child which planet they'd want to visit and why the order from the sun matters.

    Tip: Near a vent or open window it will rotate slowly, which makes the layers more visible.

Try it another way

  • An older or more detail-oriented child can add the planet's distance from the sun in miles written on the back of each disc.
  • Use watercolor paint instead of markers for the planet surfaces — it creates a softer, atmospheric look especially for gas giants.
  • Add the sun as a large yellow disc hung separately above the top straw from the same hook, so the whole solar system is present.

Keep in mind

  • The hole-punching step with a pencil point should be done on a folded piece of cardboard underneath so the pencil doesn't slip sideways.
