Cardboard Box Lunar Landing Module

This build asks children to think structurally — how do the pieces connect, where does the hatch go, what keeps it upright. Unlike a blanket fort, it stays where you put it and looks like something specific when it is done. The process of measuring by eye, cutting with scissors, and joining pieces with tape gives children at this age a real construction challenge without requiring tools beyond what is already in the house.

Before you start

Before you call your child, gather at least three cardboard boxes of different sizes — a large one for the main body, a medium one for the ascent stage on top, and smaller boxes or tubes for the legs. Open the large box fully along one seam so your child can get inside if they want, or leave it closed for a display model. Pre-cut the hatch outline on the large box with a utility knife yourself — score three sides so the child can push it open, which is far more satisfying than cutting it themselves. Set out tape and washable markers before you start. The build most often stalls at the leg-attachment stage because the legs tip over; show your child how to fold a tab at the base of each leg and tape it flat to the floor of the module. Wind-down is natural once the child starts decorating.

You will need

    Use only a box that held food or household goods, not chemicals; wipe the inside down before use.

  • Medium cardboard boxFor the ascent stage on top; any clean box of noticeably smaller size
  • Cardboard tubes or small boxesFour, for the landing legs; paper towel tubes or tissue boxes work
  • Packing tape or masking tapePacking tape holds structure; masking tape is easier for children to tear

    An adult should make the hatch cut with a utility knife before the child joins; keep the knife out of reach after.

Steps

    Present the mission brief

    Show your child the boxes and say something like, 'A lunar lander has two parts — a descent stage on the bottom that touches the moon, and a smaller ascent stage on top that brings the astronauts back. We have the pieces to build one.' This framing gives the build a real-world structure to reference.

    Tip: If your child has seen pictures of real lunar landers, even a quick description of the four legs and gold foil helps them make choices.

    Join the two main stages

    Help your child center the medium box on top of the large box and tape it in place on all four edges. Use at least four strips of packing tape — this joint takes the most stress. Let your child place and smooth each strip.

    Tip: Pressing the tape down firmly on both surfaces, then rubbing along it, helps it hold on uneven cardboard edges.

    Open the hatch

    You pre-cut the three sides of the hatch before the session; now show your child how to push the flap open and fold it back as a door. Let them decide which face of the large box is the front — this small choice gives real ownership of the design.

    Tip: If your child wants a round porthole window, they can draw one with marker; no cutting needed.

    Attach the landing legs

    Have your child hold each tube or small box against a bottom corner of the large box while you tape it. Then show them how to fold a short tab of cardboard from the base of each leg and tape it flat against the table surface — this is what stops the lander from tipping. Let your child do the folding.

    Tip: Four legs at the four corners is stable; three legs make it wobble; if you only have three tubes, add a fourth from a folded cardboard strip.

    Decorate the exterior

    Hand over the washable markers and aluminum foil if you have it. Your child can draw mission patches, porthole windows, thruster nozzles, and panel seams directly on the cardboard. Foil wraps around a leg with a small piece of tape and looks convincingly like real insulation blanket.

    Tip: Keep the marker caps together so they do not dry out mid-session.

  6. 6

    Name the mission

    Ask your child what the mission is called and where the lander is going. You can write the mission name on the side in large letters if they want, or they can write it themselves. This is also a natural signal that the build is complete.

    Tip: Some children will want to keep building; have a few extra small boxes nearby if that happens.

Try it another way

  • For a child closer to eight, challenge them to design a ramp or fold-down ladder from a cardboard strip so the astronaut figure can exit the hatch.
  • If two children are building together, assign one the descent stage and one the ascent stage, then let them negotiate how the two halves connect.
  • Wrap the entire lander in aluminum foil for a silver, finished look that holds up well enough to display on a shelf for several days.

Keep in mind

  • Use a utility knife yourself to pre-cut the hatch before the session; store it out of the child's reach immediately after.
