Soft Wall Cubby from the Couch

This build requires almost nothing from you: a few couch cushions stood on end and a blanket draped over them make a snug enclosure the child can arrange from inside. At this age, having a defined small space feels special and calm, which is exactly what a low-energy day calls for. You end up with a quiet nook the child can retreat into for the rest of the afternoon.

Before you start

Before you call the child over, pull the couch away from the wall a few inches if needed and gather two or three firm seat cushions and one large blanket. Stand two cushions upright at either end of the sofa seat to form side walls, then drape the blanket from the sofa back down over the front gap — that creates the roof and front curtain. Show the child how the blanket can be tucked or let fall, then step back. Most children this age immediately start ferrying stuffed animals inside. It tends to stall only if the cushions keep toppling; wedge the base of each cushion against the sofa seat edge to stop that. The activity winds down naturally when the child falls asleep or simply settles in to look at a book.

You will need

  • Sofa or couchNeeded as the back wall and base
  • Seat cushionsTwo or three firm ones from the same sofa
  • Large blanketBig enough to drape from sofa back to seat
  • Stuffed animals or a small pillowoptionalFor the child to arrange inside

Steps

  1. 1

    Clear the sofa seat

Remove any items from the sofa seat and set two firm cushions upright at either end, flat faces facing inward. Press each cushion base firmly against the seat edge so it does not tip.

Tip: Cushions with a flat bottom edge stay upright more easily than rounded ones.

  2. 2

    Drape the blanket roof

Lay a large blanket over the sofa back so it falls down the front, covering the gap between the two upright cushions. Leave the front edge loose so it acts as a curtain the child can open and close.

Tip: Tuck a corner of the blanket between the sofa back and seat to keep it from sliding.

  3. 3

    Invite the child in

Say something like, 'There is a little cubby on the sofa — want to see inside?' Let the child crawl in and decide where their things go. Do not rearrange anything once they are settled.

Tip: Handing them one stuffed animal to bring in gives them an immediate purpose.

  4. 4

    Settle nearby and step back

Sit within earshot on a nearby chair. The child may call you over to show you the inside, but after that first visit most children this age are content alone in the space. Check in quietly every ten minutes or so.

Try it another way

  • For a slightly older child in this band, give them the blanket first and let them figure out where it goes before you suggest standing the cushions.
  • If two children need to share the sofa, build a second cubby at the opposite end with its own blanket divider between them.
  • On a higher-energy day, let the child collect small toys from one room and 'move them in' as a longer setup game.

What they get out of it

Children practice arranging a small space to suit themselves, which builds the habit of making a place comfortable before settling in to rest or play.
