Pirates Indoor Builds at home
Pirate play and indoor building were made for each other — there is a reason children drape blankets over chairs and call it a ship without any prompting. These three activities lean into that instinct and take it further. Every pirate story needs somewhere to be: a vessel to command, a weapon to crew, a stronghold to defend or raid. These builds provide those places using cardboard, blankets, and tape you already own. The builds are satisfying precisely because pirates occupy a world of constructed things — ships are built, forts are raised, cannons are rigged — so the act of making is the story.
What is in this set
The three pirates Indoor Builds activities here run from 25 to 90 minutes — Blanket and Chair Pirate Ship is the quickest, Three-Room Pirate Island from Cardboard the longest. Between them they cover ages 3–5, ages 5–8 and ages 8–10, and each card below says which. One of them makes no mess at all. Each one wants an adult at least nearby.
Choosing one
Reach for the Blanket and Chair Pirate Ship with a 3–5 year old or any child who needs to move and be inside something right away — setup is fifteen minutes and the structure entertains for the rest of the day. The Cardboard Box Pirate Cannon suits a 5–8 year old with some energy to burn; it involves real cutting and rolling, and the payoff is immediate. Save the Three-Room Pirate Island for an 8–10 year old with ninety minutes and a preference for planning — it is the highest-effort build but produces something worth keeping.
Before you start
For all three, gather your cardboard before calling anyone over — flat boxes broken down, small boxes intact, tubes if you have them. The blanket ship needs four matching-height chairs cleared and ready. The cannon and island both need a protected table surface, so put down a few layers of newspaper if paint is going anywhere near a wood table. The thing that goes wrong across all three is running out of tape mid-build: check the roll first, because a half-empty roll of masking tape will not finish any of these.
