Snow Day Active Games at home
A snow day is not a weekend — it lands without warning, it runs long, and the children have been cooped up since they found out school was cancelled. What they need, and what you need, is something that gives the energy somewhere to go without requiring you to be the entertainment the entire time. Active games are the answer for most of the morning and early afternoon: they burn the restlessness that builds up in a house where nobody has been outside yet, they reset the mood when boredom tips into friction, and the best ones hand control to the children so you can step back. These three games do exactly that across the full age range.
What is in this set
The three snow Day Active Games activities here run from 30 to 60 minutes — Hallway Bowling with Soft Bombs is the quickest, Living Room Floor Is Lava Championship the longest. Between them they cover ages 3–5, ages 5–8 and ages 8–10, and each card below says which. One can be run by the kids once set up; the rest want an adult nearby.
Choosing one
For ages 3 to 5 on a day when you want to stay nearby, Hallway Bowling with Soft Bombs is the right call — it is low-setup, self-resetting, and gentle enough that no furniture is at risk. For ages 5 to 8 with genuine cabin fever, Sofa Cushion Obstacle Course Race burns the most physical energy and scales up easily for siblings. For ages 8 to 10 when you want the children to run the whole thing independently, Living Room Floor Is Lava Championship is the one — plan it and they will not need you again for an hour.
Before you start
For all three activities, clear the floor of anything breakable and move sharp-edged furniture to the room's edge before you explain the game — doing it after you call the children over costs you momentum. Pull all the sofa cushions and spare pillows into the main play space so they are ready regardless of which activity you land on. The most common problem across all three is a slippery surface: if your floors are bare wood or tile, lay a large rug down first, or keep the game contained to a carpeted room.
